FRIENDSHIP
FRIENDSHIP
Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people. It is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an "acquaintance" or an "association", such as a classmate, neighbor, coworker, or colleague.
In some cultures, the concept of friendship is restricted to a small number of very deep relationships; in others, such as the U.S. and Canada, a person could have many friends, and perhaps a more intense relationship with one or two people, who may be called good friends or best friends. Other colloquial terms include besties or Best Friends Forever (BFFs). Although there are many forms of friendship, certain features are common to many such bonds, such as choosing to be with one another, enjoying time spent together, and being able to engage in a positive and supportive role to one another.
Sometimes friends are distinguished from family, as in the saying "friends and family", and sometimes from lovers , although the line is blurred with friends with benefits. Similarly, being in the friend zone describes someone who is restricted from rising from the status of friend to that of lover .
Having solid friendships is important for two main reasons. First, they make life more enjoyable. We get to share the beautiful aspects of life with people who we love, which can enrich our everyday experiences. Second, our friends help us through the difficult times. Having friends to support us through hard times can make unimaginably difficult situations seem more tolerable. The most beautiful part about pouring our time and energy into friendships is that not only do friends help enrich our lives, but we enrich theirs too! Friendships get us through the tough times in life, make things more fun and enjoyable, and all-around make our lives better.
A true friend is important for innumerable reasons that include:
- Sharing your experiences: Spending time with close friends and sharing news and experiences, whether happy or sad, always makes life feel more exciting than traveling alone.
- Boosting your confidence: A friend helps you acknowledge your strengths and virtues and realize your true potential, which helps make you believe more in yourself.
- Overcoming stress: The best cure for reducing stress is a hearty laugh with a loving friend, as well as having someone to vent your worries and anger. Reducing stress can ultimately help regulate your blood pressure.
- Improving lifestyle habits: Friendship provides opportunities to learn from each other, as such a good friend helps you include good habits in your life. Studies have suggested that positive social support may help people give up bad habits, including smoking and doing drugs.
- Improving mental and physical health: By sharing your sorrows and helping you inculcate healthy habits, friends help you improve both your physical and mental health.
- Helping in making decisions: A good friend helps you make the right choices in times of confusion and doubt. Seeking a friend’s advice is always helpful.
- Helping you recover from grief: The uncertainties of life have perhaps never been so obvious as during the current pandemic. Almost everyone lost someone they knew or loved. In the face of serious illness, having comfort from a friend helps you overcome the grief of losses of any type. Be it a loss of a job or breakup, all problems seem small when you discuss with a friend. They show you the greater purposes of life, helping you a lot.
